Its outstretched wings reveal a fine network of veins, while separate studies of the head, leg and wing frame the central specimen. Handwritten-style figure labels, a scale marker and the inscription “SPECIMEN 01: LUCIFER BEE” give the design the character of an illustrated scientific plate. The Black Proof finish sets the bright anatomical detail against dark reflective fields.

As the first release in Australia’s Dark Bees series, this Niue issue brings an Australian native bee, Megachile (Hackeriapis) lucifer, into focus through precise, closely observed detail. A worldwide mintage of 700 gives the 2 oz silver coin a defined production limit, while its pairing of natural history and specimen-style design offers a distinctive alternative to conventional wildlife portraits.
