Lady Godiva returns to the coin world with a new issue from South Korean producer, Coins Today. This is a full coin, issued for the Republic of Chad, not one of this producer’s wide range of stackable bullion, and as such, is supplied boxed with a Certificate of Authenticity, and with a mintage of just 999 pieces.
Most know the story of Lady Godiva by now, and the central theme of the lady, naked on horseback, parading the streets of Coventry in protest, is well realised on the coin’s reverse face. The style of the architecture in the background is spot-on, right down to the cobbled street. It’s an attractive, almost historical rendering, ably enhanced with a high-relief strike.
The obverse is particularly interesting, choosing to depict the associated tale of Tom, the only person in Coventry to have witnessed Lady Godiva on her ride, everyone else staying indoors or looking away. This is the origin of the phrase ‘Peeping Tom’, which describes a male voyeur to this day. The design here is superb, and inventive. A human eye, detailed right down to the lashes, and even the tear duct, dominates, and reflected in the eye is the Lady Godiva depicted on the reverse face. Simple, but effective.
A neat interpretation of the almost one-thousand year old tale, filled with fine detail, especially on the obverse, where on many coins you can see less effort put in – not the case here. Available to order shortly. Dimensions will be confirmed tomorrow.
THE LEGEND OF LADY GODIVA
Wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, Lady Godiva became an icon because of the legend that she rode naked on horseback through the streets of Coventry. With her modesty only maintained through the judicious placement of her long flowing hair, she rode her horse to get remission from the oppressive taxes her husband had placed upon his tenants. She was an actual historical figure, although the tale of the ride appeared over two centuries later and is not considered truth.
