Collectable Coins of Turkey

◆ Turkish coinage spans the intricate calligraphy of Ottoman gold and silver and the changing designs of the Republic’s lira and kuruş. Imperial monograms and carefully arranged inscriptions give Ottoman issues their richly patterned compositions, while Republican designs place Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s portrait alongside national emblems and architectural landmarks. Across these periods, lettering, portraiture and relief offer distinctly different expressions of the engraver’s craft.

◆ The lira’s evolution adds another dimension, from the high-denomination issues of the late twentieth century to the currency reform of 2005, which removed six zeros, and the removal of the “New” designation in 2009. Modern circulation designs include bimetallic formats and landmarks such as Istanbul’s Bosphorus Bridge, while collector editions extend the range through precious metals, selected proof finishes and decorative treatments.
