About the design…
Commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, this unique Australian legal tender type carries a poignant, richly symbolic design. Rendered in full-colour, the design comprises a stylised wreath of poppy plants, with eight flowers, leaves and a ribbon intertwined, with the eight poppies representing the eight decades that have passed since the end of the conflict. Iconic symbols of remembrance, poppy wreaths are often laid at memorials in honour of those who made the ultimate sacrifice during wartime.
The origin of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance goes back to the First World War. The poppy was the first plant to spring from the shattered battlefields of northern France and Belgium, with military folklore proclaiming that the vivid red hues of the poppy were produced by the blood of the fallen soaking into the ground. Symbolising ‘the sacrifice of shed blood’, the poppy has thus long been considered the key symbol for Remembrance Day – the annual commemoration of the Armistice declared on the 11th of November 1918 that brought an end to WWI.
Beyond its importance in commemorating the fallen, the poppy quickly became synonymous with helping the living as well. Symbolising the sacrifice of all those who have fought in war, poppies were first sold to raise funds for ex-servicemen and their families as far back as 1921, and this tradition has grown stronger with every passing year.
Capturing the deeply poignant symbolism of the poppy with the power of modern minting, ththe latest full-colour $2 forms a moving tribute to those who served the nation during the Second World War.
