Description

  • 2000 Australian Millennium 50-cent Incused Flag variety
  • Recessed Union Jack crosses and a smooth Commonwealth Star distinguish the reverse
  • Certified AU53 (About Uncirculated) by PCGS
  • Vladimir Gottwald’s Australian flag design and Ian Rank-Broadley’s Queen Elizabeth II portrait
  • Presented in a PCGS graded holder

The recessed crosses of the Union Jack set this 2000 Australian Millennium 50-cent coin apart from the standard raised-detail issue. Vladimir Gottwald’s stylised Australian flag fills the twelve-sided reverse, accompanied by the “Millennium Year” inscription. On the Incused Flag variety, the Commonwealth Star below the Union Jack also has a smooth surface rather than the textured finish of the standard design.

Issued by the Royal Australian Mint, this variety adds a distinctive die-design difference to Australia’s decimal coinage. The exact variety mintage is unknown; approximately 200,000 is a published estimate, not an official confirmed total. This example is certified PCGS AU53, an About Uncirculated grade that acknowledges circulation wear rather than Mint State condition. Add this Incused Millennium Flag 50c to your Australian variety collection at FORTYMILLION.

The Sheldon Grading Scale

The Sheldon Grading Scale is a 70-point numerical system used by third-party grading services such as PCGS and NGC to assess coin condition. Originally developed by Dr William Sheldon for early United States large cents, it was later adapted for wider numismatic use, including Australian coins. The scale runs from 1, the lowest identifiable grade, to 70, the highest grade under the grading service’s standards. Not every integer is assigned a grade; the table below lists the assigned numerical grades with summaries adapted from PCGS standards.

Numeric grade Code Grading summary
70 MS / PR Fully struck and lustrous, free of visual marks under PCGS standards; minor as-minted defects may be permitted if they do not affect eye appeal.
69 MS / PR Virtually as struck, with minuscule imperfections; near-full strike.
68 MS / PR Virtually as struck, with slight imperfections; slight strike weakness permitted.
67 MS / PR Minor imperfections and a very good strike.
66 MS / PR Few minor marks or hairlines outside focal areas; good strike.
65 MS / PR Minor marks or hairlines, none in focal areas; above-average strike.
64 MS / PR Few marks or hairlines, or a couple of more severe ones; average or better strike.
63 MS / PR Moderate number or size of marks or hairlines; strike may not be full.
62 MS / PR No wear; fewer heavy marks or hairlines than grade 61; strike may not be full.
61 MS / PR No wear; multiple heavy marks or hairlines; strike may not be full.
60 MS / PR No wear; many heavy marks or hairlines possible; strike may not be full.
58 AU Full detail with only slight friction on high points.
55 AU Full detail with friction on less than half the surface, mainly high points.
53 AU Slight flatness and loss of lustre on design high points; some lustre remains. This coin’s certified grade is PCGS AU53.
50 AU Full detail with friction over most of the surface and slight flatness on high points.
45 XF / EF Complete detail with some high points flat.
40 XF / EF Complete detail with most high points slightly flat.
35 VF Complete but worn detail; high points flat.
30 VF Almost complete detail with flat areas.
25 VF More definition in detail and lettering than grade 20.
20 VF Some definition of detail; full, sharp lettering.
15 F More recessed detail than grade 12; sharp lettering.
12 F Some deeply recessed detail; sharp lettering.
10 VG Worn design with slightly clearer detail than grade 8.
8 VG Worn design with slight detail.
6 G Complete rims, flat detail and full peripheral lettering.
4 G Slightly worn rims, flat detail and nearly full peripheral lettering.
3 AG Worn rims; most lettering readable though worn.
2 FR Mostly worn, with some visible detail.
1 PO Identifiable date and type.

MS means Mint State, a condition grade without circulation wear. PR (PCGS) or PF denotes Proof, a method of manufacture, not an automatic claim of perfect condition. Proof coins can show wear and receive lower numerical grades. Handling or bag marks do not by themselves mean circulation wear.

Q. What identifies the Incused Flag variety?
A. The Union Jack crosses are recessed into the flag rather than raised, and the Commonwealth Star has a smooth surface.

Q. Is an AU53 coin considered circulated?
A. Yes. AU stands for About Uncirculated, also called Almost Uncirculated. Despite “uncirculated” appearing in the name, an AU coin is classified as circulated because it shows wear. Even slight wear from handling or circulation prevents a coin from being classified as Uncirculated (Mint State). This example is graded PCGS AU53, not Mint State or Brilliant Uncirculated.

Q. Is the 200,000 mintage confirmed?
A. No. It is a published estimate for the variety; the exact number struck is unknown.

Q. Was the design intended for coloured enamel?
A. That explanation has been reported, but the Royal Australian Mint has not officially confirmed it. This coin is the uncoloured copper-nickel variety.
