Few other mythical creatures have quite captured the human imagination as dragons.
In European mythology, they are represented as fire-breathing, lizard-like monsters that can fly. When provoked to anger, they are capable of incinerating foes with scorching breath. They also love gold, hoarding and guarding it fiercely in subterranean lairs.
Mystery engulfs the origins of dragon folklore. One school of thought suggests the idea sprang from the discovery of large dinosaur bones. But rainbows, fiery comets, and volcanoes may also have played into the age-old belief in dragons.
The coin portrays a vividly coloured image of a dragon at night. The creature is perched on the ruins of a gothic building, wings outstretched with flames streaming from its red-hot jaws. The obverse bears the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II supplemented by the dates of her reign ‘1952-2022’. Also included is the coin’s weight, purity, monetary denomination and 2023 year-date.
